The Drake at 140 E Walton Street opened in 1920 as a Beaux-Arts grand hotel at the hinge where Michigan Avenue meets Lake Shore Drive, marking the edge of the Gold Coast. Marshall & Fox designed it; it has hosted presidents and royalty and still anchors the north end of the shopping district.
