How to read this map
Permits per 1,000 parcels normalizes for size, so a big community area doesn’t top the map just for being big. Switch the scope to new construction or renovations to see where each kind of work concentrates.
Investment (median $) is the median applicant-reported construction cost per permit — the dollars-of-construction story a permit count can’t tell. Permits with no reported cost are excluded from the median; the drawer shows how many carried one.
Source: City of Chicago building permits (open data), trailing 365 days. Each permit is placed in its community area and ward by the City’s own recorded assignment. See methodology for freshness and suppression details. Community areas with too few permits show as “insufficient data.”
