Civic Worth Public API v1 — last updated 2026-05-10

Civic Worth’s public API responses are cacheable and redistributable, with per-source exceptions documented inline. Every /v1/* response carries metadata.licenseRestrictions[] in the body and the X-Civic-License-Restrictions: true|false header. If the array is empty + the header is false, you can cache, persist, and redistribute the response.

When a field comes from a connector whose source license forbids commercial redistribution, that field is omitted from the response and the connector appears in licenseRestrictions[] with a structured restriction kind:

  • non_commercial_only — CC-BY-NC-SA sources (Ookla Open Data broadband speed + coverage).
  • attribution_required — OSM (ODbL); attribution must appear in any derivative database or visual.
  • license_agreement_required — MLS / IDX / VOW data; requires a separate agreement with the MLS to surface listing fields.
  • other — proprietary licenses (First Street climate risk). Available only to Enterprise customers with a signed addendum.

Default permissive rights

The default is permissive — modeled after Geocodio’s policy. You may:

  • Cache responses indefinitely in your own infrastructure.
  • Display the data in your own UI without per-page attribution required.
  • Persist data in your own database alongside your customers’ private data.
  • Resell value-added products built on top of the data.

You may NOT:

  • Resell a substantially-similar API service — wholesale resale requires an Enterprise contract.
  • Strip the metadata.licenseRestrictions[] envelope when forwarding data to a customer who then redistributes it; the restrictions must propagate.
  • Combine Civic Worth data with consumer-data-broker lists. This is the FTC’s favorite enforcement target and is explicitly forbidden by every tier.

Deprecation policy

v1 endpoints are stable for 24 months from launch (May 2026 through May 2028). Breaking changes ship under /v2/* with a 12-month overlap. Field additions are non-breaking; field removals or shape changes ship under a new version.

We will email every API key owner on tier developer or above 90 days before any deprecation event. We will mirror the deprecation schedule at the top of the OpenAPI doc.

Per-connector license matrix

Civic Worth’s license posture across current and planned sources. Live enforcement reads the commercial_redistribution_allowed flag on the connectors table at request time; rows marked planned are not yet ingested, so no field from them ships today.
